Top 5 Wildlife Species to See on Your Kenya Safari
Kenya is home to some of the world's most iconic wildlife. While the Big Five get most of the attention, there are many other incredible species that make a safari unforgettable. Here are our top 5 must-see wildlife species.
1. African Elephant
The largest land mammal on Earth, elephants are highly intelligent and social creatures. Amboseli National Park offers the best elephant viewing, with massive herds against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Watch for family interactions, dust bathing, and trunk-wrestling between youngsters.
2. African Lion
The apex predator of the African savanna. Maasai Mara has one of the highest lion populations in Africa. You might witness a hunt, hear their powerful roars at dawn, or watch cubs playing. Lions are most active during cooler morning and evening hours.
3. Leopard
The most elusive of the Big Five. These solitary cats are masters of camouflage and often spotted resting in acacia trees during the day. Look for their distinctive rosette patterns and watch for their incredible strength as they haul prey into trees.
4. Giraffe
The tallest mammal, giraffes are graceful giants. Kenya has several subspecies, including the endangered Rothschild's giraffe. Watch them browse on acacia trees, engage in "necking" battles, and witness calves being born (they drop 6 feet to the ground!).
5. Cheetah
The fastest land animal, reaching speeds of 70 mph. Maasai Mara's open plains are perfect for observing cheetah hunts. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs hunt during the day, giving you excellent photography opportunities. Look for their distinctive tear-mark facial patterns.
